Huey P. Long Bridge

About the Project

The Huey P. Long Bridge, an 8,076-foot-long structure with steep grades, originally featured two 9-foot lanes on each 18-foot-wide roadway deck. CCB was contracted to saw cut the bridge deck to facilitate its widening. Given the active railroad overhead, the deck removal required strategic precision.

CCB deployed four operators who began sawing from the center of the bridge, working outward to ensure sequential deck removal. This approach was critical for maintaining the structural integrity of the cantilevered bridge, as weight had to be removed simultaneously to prevent toppling.

Due to limited space for construction equipment, the project was executed in a cut-and-pick manner. Despite these constraints, CCB successfully completed over 80,000 linear feet of deck sawing within a few months. The entire widening project had a budget of over $1.2 billion.
