Detroit Steam Turbine Generator Foundation

Description of the project

Project called for the removal of 1.5 million pounds of heavily reinforced concrete foundation so that a newer more efficient generator could be installed. The work area was located 35′ above the basement floor, inside an operating power plant.

There was 1″ clearance on all four sides and the foundation was located 25′ away from another generator and 20′ from a control room that both had to remain in operation.

The top 8′ of the 85′ x 28′ frame type foundation was saw cut and left in place for removal by the owner. All work was performed dust-free and without vibration or interference with the plant’s daily operation. Pieces as large as 130 tons were removed and some cuts had up-to 106 #11 bar and heavy flange 24″ I-beams.
